Rainn Wilson was born on January 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. He is the son of Shay Cooper, a yoga teacher and actress, and Robert G. Wilson, an artist, novelist, and business consultant who authored a science fiction novel titled Tentacles of Dawn. Wilson is of Norwegian and English descent.
He attended Central Middle School and Shorecrest High School in Washington, where he played bassoon and clarinet in a band. Following his family’s move to Illinois to work at the Baháʼí National Center, he transferred to New Trier High School, from which he graduated. Wilson studied theater at Tufts University and the University of Washington, where he also taught acting classes.
Wilson holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He became a member of The Acting Company and performed in various theatrical productions in New York City. During this period, he supplemented his income by working as a moving van driver.
Rainn Wilson is best known for his portrayal of Dwight Schrute, the eccentric and egotistical assistant regional manager in the American version of The Office. His performance earned him three Emmy Award nominations, although he did not win. His role on the show became a cultural touchstone and significantly elevated his career.
Wilson appeared as Arthur Martin, a mortuary intern, on HBO's critically acclaimed series Six Feet Under. He has guest-starred on several television shows including Reno 911!, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Charmed, Numb3rs, Monk, Entourage, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
He also voiced the character of Gallaxhar, the alien villain, in the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens. Wilson starred as Detective Everett Backstrom in the crime comedy-drama Backstrom, which aired in 2015.
In 2007, Wilson hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live, becoming the second cast member from The Office to do so, following Steve Carell. Additionally, he took part in a promotional role as "Jim Mike," relationship manager for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team during the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Wilson is married to writer Holiday Reinhorn, whom he met during an acting class in college. They were wed on the banks of the Kalama River in Washington. The couple has one son, Walter McKenzie Wilson, born in 2004. They reside in Agoura Hills, California, and also own a home near Sisters, Oregon.
The family are active members of the Baháʼí Faith. Among their pets are three pit bulls—Pilot, Barry, and Oona—and a zonkey named Derek. In 2009, a short film inspired by Wilson’s character in The Office was selected for screening at the Dawn Breakers International Film Festival in Zurich, reflecting aspects of his Baháʼí beliefs.
In a 2008 appearance on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, Wilson described himself as a politically diverse independent. He stated that he has voted for candidates from the Democratic, Green, and Republican parties.
