Raul Esparza is known as an American television and stage actor. He is most famous for his role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Raul Eduardo Esparza was born on October 24, 1970, in Wilmington, Delaware. He is of Cuban descent. and was raised in Miami, Florida. Esparaza attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. He graduated in 1988 and won a Silver Knight Award. Esparza attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he received a bachelor's degree in English and a bachelor of fine arts in drama in 1992.
Raul Esparza got married to his high school girlfriend Michele Marie Perez in 1994 after the couple had been dating for years. The couple was married for over 15 years but got divorced in 2008. The couple never had any children during their long married life. The divorce could be attributed to the fact that Raul came out as in having same-gender relationships.
Raul Esparza was rumored to be dating the basketball player, Nick Mayo.
Raul Esparza's entertainment career was divided into two major areas, stage performances and acting in movies or television.
Stage Acting
His first acting role was as Che in the national tour of Evita, opposite Natalie Toro in 1993. Esparza drew attention and received wide acclaim with his first performance in a 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show which won him the prestigious Theatre World Award. He was nominated for the Tony Award as the best-featured actor in the musical as well as a nomination for the Drama Desk Award for his role in the musical called Taboo, which was produced by Boy George.

Esparza's performance on stage in Company garnered him another nomination for a Tony. Although he has yet to win a Tony, Esparza has won numerous other awards including a Theatre World Award, Obie Award, Drama Desk Award, Barrymore Awards, HOLA Jose Ferre Tespis Award, Enquirer Acclaim Awards, and Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Raul has also received nominations for the Helen Hayes Award and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Raul would go on to appear in other musicals such as Sunday in the Park with George as well as Merrily We Roll Along performed at the Kennedy Center. He also starred in the Leap of Faith stage musical in the role of the "Reverend" Jonas Nightingale. His performance in Speed-the-Plow earned him a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play, making him only the second performer to be nominated in all four acting categories a performer is eligible for at the Tonys. Esparza is also famous for his role of Caractacus Potts in the Broadway musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Television Acting
Esparza made his television acting debut playing a small role in an episode of the TV film Spin City in 1977. Esparza also had a recurring role on the TV show Pushing Daisies as traveling salesman Alfredo Aldarisiohe. In 2012, Esparza landed a recurring role for the popular and long-running series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Ahead of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit's 14th season, Warren Leight approached Esparza about playing the show's next Assistant District Attorney.
Although the pair had enjoyed working together on the short-lived 2012 Broadway production Leap of Faith, Esparza was initially hesitant about taking the role. He was, however, eventually convinced and played the role of the Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, Rafael Barba. Esparza went on to appear in a total of eleven episodes during the 14th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His role in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit was not his first Law & Order role, however, as he had previously portrayed an assistant district attorney in a 2009 episode of Law and Order, Criminal Intent, and a suspect in a 2010 episode of the original Law and Order.
He also did voice-over work for the audiobook of Under the Dome for the author Stephen King. Esparza appeared with Desi Arnaz Jr. and Lucie Arnaz in an event honoring Desi Arnaz and his Orchestra. Esparza also appeared in Wes Craven's My Soul to Take.
