His first acting role was as Che in the national tour of Evita, opposite Natalie Toro in 1993. Esparza drew attention and received wide acclaim with his first performance in a 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show which won him the prestigious Theatre World Award. He was nominated for the Tony Award as the best-featured actor in the musical as well as a nomination for the Drama Desk Award for his role in the musical called Taboo, which was produced by Boy George.
