He graduated in 1988 and won a Silver Knight Award. Esparza attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he received a bachelor's degree in English and a bachelor of fine arts in drama in 1992.

He was nominated for the Tony Award as the best-featured actor in the musical as well as a nomination for the Drama Desk Award for his role in the musical called Taboo, which was produced by Boy George.
