Richard Madden was born in 1986 in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, near Paisley and Glasgow, Scotland. He was raised in the area alongside his older brother and younger sister. His mother, Pat, worked as a classroom assistant, while his father, also named Richard, served in the fire brigade. Madden holds Scottish citizenship.
At the age of 11, Madden joined the youth theatre program at the Paisley Arts Centre in an effort to overcome his shyness. His early interest in acting led to roles in various productions, including a part in the television series Barmy Aunt Boomerang, in which he played Sebastian. The show aired from 1999 to 2000 and marked some of his first appearances on screen.
He went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), from which he later graduated. During his time there, he performed with the Glasgow Repertory Company and at the Arches Theatre.
While still a student, Madden starred in Tom Fool by Franz Xaver Kroetz at the Citizens Theatre—a performance well-received enough to be transferred to London. There, he caught the attention of casting directors from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, leading to his casting as Romeo in their production of Romeo and Juliet. After its London run, the production went on tour across open-air venues during summer 2007, marking the Globe Theatre’s first such tour.
Additionally, he played Callum McGregor in a stage adaptation of Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses, further establishing his theatrical credentials.
Following his work on stage, Madden transitioned to television with a lead role as Dean McKenzie in the 2009 BBC series Hope Springs. He also appeared as Ripley in the 2010 television film Chatroom and portrayed singer Kirk Brandon in Worried About The Boy, a biopic about Boy George. That same year, he was featured in Channel 4’s Sirens and the BBC adaptation of Birdsong.
Madden rose to international fame for his portrayal of Robb Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones. He became widely recognized for this role, which he played from 2011 to 2013. He later starred as Prince Kit in Disney's Cinderella (2015), a role that significantly boosted his profile and reportedly earned him around $500,000. As of recent estimates, his net worth stands at approximately $6 million.
Richard Madden was previously in a relationship with actress Jenna Coleman. Although the couple was reportedly serious, they ultimately parted ways. He has also been linked to television presenter Laura Whitmore and actress Emilia Clarke, though the latter relationship has not been publicly confirmed by either party.
There have been public rumors regarding Madden's sexuality, particularly surrounding speculation about him being gay. However, he has not identified as such and has only been publicly linked to women. Madden has generally kept his private life out of the spotlight, and critics note that an actor's personal orientation does not diminish their talent or public appeal.
