RJ Mitte was born on August 21, 1992, in Lafayette, Louisiana. His birth, an emergency caesarean section, resulted in a brief lack of oxygen, leading to permanent brain damage. As a result, he was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy. During much of his early childhood, Mitte used walking aids such as crutches to help strengthen his muscles and improve mobility. By his teenage years, he no longer required assistance to walk.
After his parents separated, Mitte was primarily raised by his mother. From an early age, he assumed financial responsibilities to support his family, taking on multiple jobs by the age of 13.
Mitte’s interest in acting began in 2007 when he was cast as an extra on the television show Hannah Montana. Motivated by this experience, he started taking acting lessons. His breakthrough came shortly afterward when he was cast as Walter White Jr.—a character who also has cerebral palsy—in AMC’s acclaimed drama series Breaking Bad. Mitte portrayed the role across all five seasons, appearing in 53 episodes between 2008 and 2013.
His performance was widely praised and contributed to the show's critical success. In 2013, he played Russ Auster in the series Vegas and was later cast as Campbell Bingman in the 2014 series Switched at Birth, further broadening his television portfolio.
Mitte received several accolades for his role in Breaking Bad. In 2013, he was honored with the Media Access Award, specifically the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award, recognizing his advocacy for actors with disabilities. He was also part of the ensemble recognized by the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and received a similar nomination in 2011. Additionally, he won an award at the 2014 Gasparilla International Film Festival.
Expanding his presence beyond television, Mitte appeared in several music videos. In 2013, he featured in Dead Bite by Hollywood Undead and Party Like Tomorrow is the End of the World by Steel Panther. In 2016, he appeared in the music video for If I Get High by Nothing But Thieves, as well as In the Dark by 3 Doors Down.
Mitte also pursued film roles. His film debut came with the short Stump in 2011, followed by more prominent roles in House of Last Things (2013), Dixieland (2015), and a lead role as Doug in Who’s Driving Doug (2016), where he played a character with muscular dystrophy, showcasing his commitment to authentic representation of disabilities in media.
In addition to acting, Mitte has explored modeling. He modeled in Gap’s 2014 spring campaign and walked the runway for designer Vivienne Westwood in June 2015, further expanding his profile in the fashion industry.
Beyond his group win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Mitte was also individually nominated for the "Best Performance in a TV Series – Recurring Young Actor 17–21" category at the 2012 Young Artist Awards. These recognitions reflect both his talent and his influence as a young actor with a disability achieving success in a competitive industry.
Mitte has maintained a private stance regarding his personal relationships, and there is no publicly confirmed information about his romantic life. He continues to earn a steady income through his work and endorsements, with an estimated net worth of approximately $2.5 million.
