R J Mitte was born on twenty first August, 1992 in Lafayette, Louisiana in an emergency caesarian that resulted in permanent brain damage as he was not breathing for a few seconds at the time of his birth. This has resulted in him being mildly affected by a condition known as cerebral palsy. For a significant part of his childhood, Mitte was fitted with walking devices like crutches in order to make his body grow stronger. By the time he turned a teen, he did not require any assistance from walking devices. After his parents split up, he was taken care of by his mother and has been financially accountable since the young age of 13. He used to take up multiple jobs so as to ensure the financial stability of his family.
Mitte started to become inquisitive about films when he got the role as an extra in the TV series ‘Hannah Montana’ in 2007. He then decided to take on acting lessons. Soon, he was awarded the role of ‘Walter White Jr.’ in ‘Breaking Bad’ who also suffers from cerebral palsy, in which he did fifty-three episodes between 2008 and 2013. In 2013, he portrayed the role of ‘Russ Auster’ in the TV series ‘Vegas’ and was offered the role of ‘Campbell Bingman’ in 2014 for the series ‘Switched at Birth’.
In 2013, he was awarded the ‘Media Access Award’ under the category ‘SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award’. He also been awarded the ‘Screen Actors Guild Award’ for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’. He has also won an award at the ‘Gasparilla International Film Festival’ in 2014. All these accolades and nominations were for his exemplary performance in the popular TV Series Breaking Bad.
In 2013, he starred in music videos by ‘Hollywood Undead’ for ‘Dead Bite’ and ‘Party Like Tomorrow is the End of This World’ by ‘Steel Panther’. In 2016, he appeared in a few music videos including ‘If I Get High’ by ‘Nothing but Thieves’ and also ‘In The Dark’ by ‘3 Doors Down’.
Mitte has also done a few roles in movies. According to his biography, his motion picture debut began with ‘Stump’ in 2011, followed by ‘House of Last Things’ in 2013, ‘Dixieland’ in 2015, and portrayed the main character Doug in ‘Who’s Driving Doug’ in 2016. Mitte has had a short fling with modelling too. He modelled for ‘Gap’ in the spring of 2014. He also cat-walked for Vivienne Westwood in June 2015. He was nominated for the ‘Screen Actors Guild Award’ in 2011 for 2 consecutive years. He was also a nominee for ‘Best Performance in a TV Series- Recurring Young Actor 17-21’ Award in 2012.
