Ryan Higa was born on June 6, 1990, in Hilo, Hawaii, United States. He is of Japanese descent and holds American nationality. He graduated from Waiakea High School in 2008. Ryan's parents are Wendell and Luci Higa, and he has an older brother named Kyle. His mother, Luci, has also managed aspects of his professional career.
In addition to his creative talents, Ryan trained in judo and holds a black belt. During high school, he also participated in wrestling. He is approximately 174 cm tall and weighs around 69 kg.
Ryan Higa began his YouTube career in 2006 by launching the channel “nigahiga” with his friend Sean Fujiyoshi. Initially, the duo gained popularity through lip-sync videos of popular songs, and later expanded into comedic sketches. Guest appearances on the channel included Kyle Chun, Tim Enos, Tarynn Nago, and Ryan Villaruel.
“Nigahiga” became one of the most popular YouTube channels of its time. It was the most subscribed channel on the platform for 677 consecutive days between 2009 and 2011—a record that remained unbeaten until overtaken by PewDiePie. By June 2018, the channel amassed more than 21 million subscribers and over three billion views.
Ryan also launched a secondary channel, “HigaTV,” in 2011. This channel featured behind-the-scenes content and personal video blogs. By mid-2018, HigaTV had surpassed five million subscribers, further demonstrating Ryan’s ability to engage audiences across different formats.
In 2012, Ryan founded the Ryan Higa Production Company (RHPC), aimed at creating original digital content along with a collaborative team. As his popularity grew, so did his ambitions. In 2016, he co-founded a parody K-pop boy band named “Boys Generally Asian” (BgA) with Justin Chon, Jun Sung Ahn, Phillip Wang, and David Choi. The band gained attention both for its comedic appeal and for highlighting Asian-American representation in entertainment.
Ryan’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. In 2008, some of his videos, including “How to Be Ninja,” “How to Be Gangster,” and “How to Be Emo,” were temporarily removed due to copyright violations. Fortunately, after adjustments and the acquisition of proper rights, these videos were reinstated in 2009.
After graduating high school, Ryan moved to Las Vegas to study nuclear medicine at the University of Nevada. While his educational pursuits initially took a different direction, his ongoing commitment to content creation became his full-time focus.
Though Ryan has not received major traditional entertainment awards, he is widely recognized as one of YouTube's early influencers and digital pioneers. His estimated net worth as of mid-2018 is approximately $2 million, primarily earned through YouTube monetization, sponsorships, and creative projects.
Ryan Higa has kept much of his personal life private. He was previously in a long-term relationship with Tarynn Nago, but they separated in 2010. Since then, Ryan has not publicly confirmed any other relationships. As of the most recent publicly available information, he remains single and has never been married.
Known for his humor and positive online presence, Ryan Higa continues to be an influential figure in the world of digital creator culture.
