Sara Lynn Evans is an American country musician known for “No Place That Far”, “Restless”, “Born to Fly” and many others. She has released eight albums. She has had both platinum and gold albums. She has won many awards including BMI, Dove Award, and Academy of Country Music Award.
Evans was born in Boonesville, Missouri. She was raised on a farm and is the eldest girl of seven children. She began singing at an early age and was singing in her family’s band when she was young. When she was eight years old she was hit by a car, which resulted in multiple fractures in her legs and caused her to be in a wheelchair for some time. She was able to keep singing while she was getting better which helped to help pay for her medical bills. When she was a teenager she began singing at a nightclub in Missouri for a couple of years.
When she was 20 she moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career as a country music singer. She met a musician named Craig Schelske two years later and moved with him to Oregon. She moved back to Nashville in 1997 and began to record demos. A popular songwriter, Harlan Howard was impressed with her work, and he was able to help her sign a deal with RCA Nashville.
She released her first album with RCA in 1997 and released her second album the following year. Both albums were critically acclaimed although none of the singles from them made it into the Top 40. She released her third album in 2000 and finally managed to break into the top charts. She also received her first CMA from that album. She went on to release 4 more albums with RCA. In 2015 she split from this contract and signed a contract with Concord Music Group to join Sugar Hill Records. Due to some issues with Sugar Hill Records, Sara decided to launch her own record company which was titled Born To Fly Records. She released her latest album in 2017 under this independent label.
Her personal life has been somewhat tumultuous due to the circumstances surrounding her divorce from Craig Schelske in 2007. She married him in 1993, and she has three children from this marriage. She announced her divorce from Craig in 2006 after she also announced her departure from Dancing With the Stars. She has stated that she left Dancing With The Stars in order to focus on her family matters. The reasons cited for the divorce were “inappropriate marital conduct”, “irreconcilable differences”, and “adultery”. She also managed to get a temporary restraining order against him that prohibited him from harassing her or abusing her in any way as well as interfering in her parenting or taking the children to Oregon.
She has claimed that Craig was unemployed for a long time while they were married and that he became an alcoholic. She also claimed that he cheated on her by having an affair with the nanny of their children. The nanny in question did not confirm this, so there is no evidence for this claim. Evans has also claimed that he kept up to a hundred photos of himself nude on his computer and that he has photos of himself engaging in sex acts with other women. There were also reports that he often watches pornography on the family computer. Along with these claims, she has also accused him of verbal abuse.

Craig has denied the claims of the unemployment, verbal abuse, infidelity and the alcoholism. Craig said that the intimate pictures involve both Craig and Sara and thus all of those images that she has mentioned are limited to the images of a married couple taken by Evans. Craig has also accused Sara of having a relationship with a lot of musicians and also indicated that Kenny Chesney was her one of her lovers. He has also stated that she exposed the children to drugs and alcohol and a generally unsafe atmosphere while they were on tour with her.
According to the separation settlement, Craig was entitled to receive 500 thousand dollars in alimony payments from his former wife over ten years. Sara was awarded the custody of all the children. Craig has complained that as she restricted him from talking to the public about the separation he was not able to convey what really happened to the media. He said that she wrongly accused him of being a porn obsessive adulterer to in order to deny him custody of the kids. Not long after this news was published, Sara again got another restraining order to prevent him from making any statements about the separation.
In 2007, Alison Clinton Lee and her husband filed a defamation suit against Sara for using her name in the list of women Craig had a relationship with. Clinton was the nanny of Sara’s kids for five years as well as her personal assistant and the co-president of her fan club. She sued her for 3 million dollars, but the court settled the case, stating the Sara should pay 500 thousand dollars to Alison. Craig has also filed two lawsuits; one against TMZ for defamation of character and another against Evan’s attorney for slander.
In 2014, Craig stopped paying Sara the money needed for child support. He was reportedly 330,000 dollars behind on child support when he filed for bankruptcy. He announced that he only has 2 trucks, 60 DVDs, 3 firearms, 3 silver coins, 2 chickens, 4 vacuum cleaners, and 40 books to his name. He seems to have accrued a large amount of debt that the aforementioned assets cannot cover. However, the court still issued an arrest warrant against him for forfeiting the court’s order of paying child support.
In 2008, she got married to Jay Barker. He is a national football star who was the quarterback for University of Alabama and a national championship winner. He now hosts a radio show. The couple live together in Mountain Brook, Alabama with their children.
