Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Displaying musical talent from an early age, she began playing the ukulele at four years old. She later pursued classical training in guitar, piano, and voice at the Maritime Conservatory of Music, studying under the framework of The Royal Conservatory of Music.
During her teenage years, while still attending Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, McLachlan became the lead singer of a local rock band called The October Game. The group recorded a song titled "Grind," which appeared on the independent Flamingo Records compilations Out of the Fog and Out of the Fog Too.
Remarkably, McLachlan signed a recording contract with Nettwerk Records before composing her first original song. Her ethereal voice and emotive songwriting led to a successful career in music, culminating in a devoted fan base and critical acclaim. Over the years, she became known for hits such as "Angel," "Building a Mystery," and "I Will Remember You."
Her music often blends pop, folk, and adult contemporary genres, making her a defining voice of 1990s alternative music. McLachlan also became the founder of the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female solo artists and bands led by women, further solidifying her legacy in the music industry.
In 1997, Sarah McLachlan married drummer Ashwin Sood. The couple held their wedding ceremony in Jamaica. In 2001, the same year McLachlan became pregnant with her first child, her mother passed away after a battle with cancer. Despite the profound personal loss, McLachlan continued to focus on her music and family.
Sarah McLachlan has two daughters: India Ann Sushil Sood, born in 2002, and Taja Sood, born in 2007. Contrary to a common misconception, she does not have a son.
By 2009, Sarah McLachlan had sold over 30 million albums worldwide, affirming her status as one of Canada’s most successful musical artists. Her most recent studio album, Shine On, was released on May 6, 2014. The album was a deeply personal project that reflected themes of healing and renewal, inspired in part by her own life experiences.
In addition to her commercial success, McLachlan is known for her philanthropic work, particularly through the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which offers free music education to underserved youth in Canada. Her contributions to music and charity have earned her multiple awards and honors, including several Juno and Grammy Awards.
