Scooter Gennett is an American former professional baseball second baseman who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, and San Francisco Giants. He is best known for becoming only the 17th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a single game.
Ryan Joseph "Scooter" Gennett was born on May 1, 1990, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Joe and Tina Gennett. His father, Joe Gennett, served as a scout for the Houston Astros. He has one sister, Kristen LaRoche. Gennett's family later moved to Florida to allow him to play baseball year-round. He attended Sarasota High School and graduated in 2009.
Gennett began his professional baseball career when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He quickly progressed through the minor league system and was selected to play in the 2012 All-Star Futures Game. Gennett made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2013 against the Oakland Athletics.
Over the following seasons, Gennett established himself as a productive hitter. In December 2016, he and the Brewers reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth $2.525 million for the 2017 season. However, in March 2017, he was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds.
On June 6, 2017, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, Gennett made MLB history by hitting four home runs in a single game, including a grand slam, during a matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals. He became the first Reds player ever to achieve this milestone and only the 17th player in league history. This remarkable feat greatly heightened his reputation and legacy in professional baseball.
He continued to have a strong 2017 season, hitting his 20th home run on August 14 and finishing the year with impressive statistics. In 2018, Gennett was selected for the MLB All-Star Game. That season, he concluded with 23 home runs, 92 RBIs, and a .310 batting average, marking one of the peak performances in his career.
In July 2019, Gennett was traded by the Reds to the San Francisco Giants around the MLB trade deadline. Following the trade, he updated his Twitter bio to state: "I Love God, my Family and my Team the San Francisco Giants," reflecting his enthusiasm for the new chapter. At the time he was traded, Gennett had been rehabbing from injuries and quickly joined the Giants, traveling to Philadelphia to meet the team during a road trip.
His tenure with the Giants was short-lived, and he was released in August 2019. This marked the end of his MLB playing career, though he has remained a memorable figure for his offensive accomplishments and work ethic.
Scooter Gennett is married to Kelsey Gennett, a licensed real estate agent. The couple met in high school and began dating in 2007 before getting engaged in 2014. They married in April 2015, hosting their wedding in a unique location—a cave that had once housed a brewery. The couple has maintained a relatively private personal life, though Gennett has often expressed his strong values in family and faith.
