Shonda Rhimes was born on the 13th of January, 1970. Daughter of Vera and Ilee Rhimes Jr., she is the youngest of six children, she has two older brothers and three older sisters. Her mother went to college and then earned her Ph.D. while raising their six children, her father holds an MBA. Her biography is a fascinating one, she was born and raised in Chicago. Shonda attended Marian Catholic High School and Dartmouth College. She started off as an English major with a minor in film studies. While she attended college, she wrote for the school newspaper, she joined the Black Underground Theater Association and still found time to direct and perform in school productions.

Shonda’s oldest daughter Harper and middle daughter Emerson were both adopted, her newest addition Beckett was born through surrogacy. Motherhood and getting out of her comfort zone has brought about some physical changes in her life, like her 117lb. weight loss. The mother of three young girls knew it was going to be hard and that she was going to hate it, but she did it to be around for her girls.
Career
After her college graduation Shonda and one of her sisters moved to San Francisco, where she got a job at an advertising agency, McCann Erickson. Debra Martin Chase hired her as her intern. She also interned at Denzel Washington’s production company. She then went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts Degree from USC School of Cinematic Arts.
She earned a salary by working as a counselor that taught mental health patients job skills to make ends meet.
Between 1995-2001, she started doing some small directing jobs and some research writing. In 2001, she wrote the controversial story of Brittany Spears; this film grossed over $60 million.
