Sophie Raworth is known as an English journalist. She is most famous for her work on “BBC News at One”.
Sophie Jane Raworth was born on May 15th, 1968 in Surrey, United Kingdom. Her mother was a florist and her father was a local businessman. She grew up in the influential area of Twickenham located in southwestern London. Her education consisted of attending the independent and private high school Putney High and St. Paul’s Girls’ school. Her university education involved attending the University of Manchester, obtaining a degree in both the French and German languages. After the completion of her undergraduate degree, Sophie taught English for a year to teenagers before focusing on a postgraduate degree at City University, London. She studied broadcasting and journalism for her graduate degree.
Sophie Raworth got married to Richard Winter in 2003. They have three children named Oliver Winter, Georgia Winter, and Ella Rose Winter.
Sophie Raworth's career took off at an accelerated pace after she joined BBC in 1992 as a news reporter for Greater Manchester Radio. She then ended up working for BBC Regions in Brussels in 1994. She joined the BBC’s “Look North” program in Leeds and became a regular presenter in 1995. She remained working in Leeds until her move to national television to co-host the show “Breakfast News” on BBC working alongside Justin Webb and later John Nicolson.
In the year 2000, she joined the early morning news “Breakfast” at its inception presenting along with Jeremy Bowen and later Dermot Murnaghan. A few years later in 2003, she was moved to “BBC News at Six” and remained working on the show until October of 2005 when she left for maternity leave and was replaced by Natasha Kaplinsky. Upon her return in 2006, she moved to “BBC News at One”.
Sophie’s career has not been without some hiccups. When she was broadcasting in 2017, she was unaware that an X-Rated film could be seen in the background behind her. It was reported to Twitter quickly and BBC could not confirm what had gone wrong to make such a thing happened, according to The Sun news report.

In 2008, Sophie took a maternity leave to give birth to her third child and returned later in August of the same year. In 2009, she became a relief newsreader. She remained a relief news reporter until her debut as the presenter of “Watchdog Daily” in 2012. A year later she was presented a Doctorate of Arts by the City University of London. She covered large news stories such as The Royal Wedding and the London Olympics in 2012.
Sophie enjoys running, she ran the Great North Run in October 2008. She has also completed four other marathons including the London Marathon.
In 2008, she raised thousands of dollars for St. George’s Hospital to help purchase new neonatal equipment. She stated to the NHS Foundation Trust, “When I visited the neonatal unit this summer, it made me realize just how lucky I’ve been to have three big and healthy babies. The money I’ve raised will buy medical equipment, like an incubator, which they desperately need.”
Sophie’s passion for running and charity raising has led her to many sponsorships for her runs. She hopes to run many more marathons in the future to support her charities. She claims this has become her addiction on a You & Your’s BBC Radio 4 broadcast.
