Stipe Miocic is an American professional mixed martial artist, best known for his achievements in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he has held the UFC Heavyweight Championship multiple times. Recognized for his powerful striking and well-rounded fighting style, Miocic is widely regarded as one of the most successful heavyweights in MMA history.
Stipe Miocic was born on August 19, 1982, in Euclid, Ohio, to Croatian immigrants Kathy and Bojan Miocic. His mother is from Cetingrad and his father from Rtina. Raised in a culturally rich household, Miocic grew up embracing both American and Croatian values.
During his time at Eastlake North High School, Miocic was a multi-sport athlete, participating in baseball, football, and wrestling. He then attended Cleveland State University, majoring in marketing and communications, before transferring to Trevecca Nazarene University in Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications.
Miocic excelled in college baseball, hitting .344 with seven home runs in his senior year and helping his team, the Trojans, win the 2005 TranSouth Athletic Conference title. His performance caught the interest of several Major League Baseball scouts, but he chose to shift his focus to combat sports.
While juggling wrestling and baseball, Miocic was introduced to mixed martial arts (MMA) through his work as a training partner for Dan Bobish at Strong Style MMA in Independence, Ohio. Though relatively new to combat sports, he quickly made a name for himself in boxing by outperforming seasoned fighters despite limited experience. Ultimately, he chose to pursue a professional career in MMA.
Stipe Miocic began his professional MMA career with dominant performances that showcased his knockout power and athleticism. Over the years, he amassed a record of 20 wins and 4 losses (as of August 2023), with 15 of his victories coming by way of knockout and 5 by decision. His ability to mix striking with wrestling has made him one of the most complete heavyweights in UFC history.
In August 2019, at UFC 241, Miocic reclaimed the UFC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Daniel Cormier in a highly anticipated rematch. After being outboxed in the early rounds, Miocic made a key tactical adjustment by targeting Cormier’s body with repeated punches. The sustained body shots eventually wore Cormier down, allowing Miocic to finish the fight with a flurry of strikes in the fourth round.
Stipe Miocic holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC heavyweight history. His successful defenses include notable victories over Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos, and Francis Ngannou. His reign cemented his legacy as one of the greatest heavyweights in MMA.
In addition to his UFC accolades, Miocic has also worked as a part-time firefighter-paramedic in Ohio, balancing his fighting career with public service—a unique distinction among elite athletes.
On June 18, 2016, Stipe Miocic married Ryan Marie Carney at Divine Word Catholic Church in Kirtland, Ohio. A registered nurse, Carney has supported Miocic throughout his fighting career. The couple welcomed their daughter, Meelah Claire, on July 24, 2018.
Miocic often credits his family as a major source of motivation and balance in his life. Outside the octagon, he is known for his humility, strong work ethic, and dedication to giving back to the community.
