Her father, Eddie Garr, was a vaudeville performer, comedian, and actor, while her mother, Phyllis Lind Garr, was a dancer. She is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers. Garr is of Irish descent on her father's side, and her maternal grandparents emigrated from Austria. She graduated from North Hollywood High School and later attended California State University, Northridge.
Garr’s entertainment career spans over four decades, during which she appeared in more than 140 film and television projects. One of her early roles was a small part in the 1968 film Head, a surreal comedy featuring the Monkees and co-written by Jack Nicholson. She recalled in an interview that her connection to the film came through Nicholson, whom she met in an acting class. “He wrote the script for Head, so all of us in the class got little tiny parts in the movie,” she noted.
After her role in Head, Garr began gaining more recognition in the industry. Her natural comedic timing and versatility led to a successful film and television career during the 1970s and 1980s. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the critically acclaimed film Tootsie (1982). Other major film credits include Young Frankenstein (1974), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Mr. Mom (1983).
Though she continued acting throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Garr began to reduce her workload after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002. Her last credited film appearance was in 2007. In addition to her acting, she has been an advocate for MS awareness, often speaking publicly about her condition to raise funds and awareness for medical research.
Teri Garr currently resides in Lakewood, California. Despite her retirement from acting, she remains a respected figure in the entertainment industry and is celebrated for her contributions to film and television. Her long-standing career, marked by both comedic and dramatic roles, highlights her versatility and legacy as a beloved American actress.
