Tig Notaro, born Mathilde O'Callaghan Notaro on March 24, 1971, in Jackson, Mississippi, is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actress, and radio host. She was raised primarily in Pass Christian, Mississippi, before her family relocated to Spring, Texas, near Houston, when she was in kindergarten. Tig is the daughter of Mathilde Notaro and Pat Notaro, and she has an older brother, Renaud Notaro, who is known as a prominent radio host.
Notaro did not complete high school in the traditional manner; she dropped out but later earned her GED in 1990.
Before entering the world of comedy, Notaro began her professional life in the music industry. During the 1990s, she worked as a band manager, gaining behind-the-scenes experience in entertainment. However, her interests eventually shifted toward comedy, where she found her true passion and calling.
Her early appearances on "Comedy Central Presents" and "The Sarah Silverman Program" helped establish her unique voice in the comedy scene. Her dry wit and deadpan delivery led to critical and audience acclaim.
Notaro further cemented her position in the comedy world as a writer and performer. Collaborating with fellow comedian Kyle Dunnigan and David Huntsberger, she co-hosted the popular podcast "Professor Blastoff," which ran from 2011 to 2015 and explored philosophical questions with a humorous touch.
That same year, she released her debut stand-up album, Good One, marking her emergence as a major voice in stand-up comedy. Her second album, Live, released in 2012, gained widespread attention. The performance was recorded shortly after she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, offering a poignant, candid, and humorous take on her personal challenges. The album received critical acclaim and is often cited as a seminal work in modern stand-up.
In 2012, Notaro underwent a double mastectomy following her cancer diagnosis and later announced that she was cancer-free. Her openness about her health struggles and the way she incorporated them into her work brought her further recognition and respect within and beyond the comedy community.
On October 24, 2015, Notaro married actress Stephanie Allynne. The couple welcomed twin sons in 2016, born via surrogate using Allynne's eggs.
