Tim Gunn, born Timothy MacKenzie Gunn on July 29, 1953, is an American chief creative officer, television personality, and fashion consultant. He is widely recognized for his contributions to fashion education, reality television, and style guidance. His mother was Nancy Gunn, and his father, George William Gunn, worked with the FBI and was involved in the investigation of the Alger Hiss case.
Gunn was an accomplished swimmer during his high school years. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C.
Tim Gunn joined Parsons The New School for Design in 1982. Over the years, he progressed through various administrative roles, becoming associate dean in 1989. In 2000, he was appointed chair of the Fashion Design Department. Gunn played a pivotal role in modernizing the program, revamping its curriculum to better align with the evolving demands of the 21st-century fashion industry.
Gunn gained widespread popularity as a mentor on the reality competition show Project Runway, which premiered in 2004. He became known for his supportive critiques and his signature phrase, “Make it work.” His work on the show earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013 for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.
In 2007, he headlined his own reality series, Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, which debuted on Bravo. The show focused on helping participants overcome fashion challenges, reflecting Gunn's expertise as a style consultant. That same year, he published the book Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style, co-authored with Kate Moloney and released by Abrams Image.
Beyond Project Runway, Gunn made several television appearances. He voiced himself in two episodes of Ugly Betty in 2007 and guest-starred in a 2009 episode of Drop Dead Diva. He also made multiple cameo appearances on How I Met Your Mother as the fictional personal tailor of the character Barney Stinson.
In 2010, Gunn appeared as himself in Season 4 of Gossip Girl. He also occasionally joined The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, offering advice during the show's humorous viewer mail segments.
In 2007, Tim Gunn transitioned from Parsons to take on the position of Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne Inc. That same year, he received significant recognition: April 27, 2007, was declared “Tim Gunn Day” in Palm Desert, California. He was also honored with a certificate of recognition from Palm Springs and a commemorative plaque from Rancho Mirage.
In 2009, Gunn returned to speak at the Corcoran College of Art and Design's commencement ceremony and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the institution.
Tim Gunn resides in Manhattan, New York. He has been openly gay for most of his adult life, though he initially kept his sexuality private, only revealing it to his sister around the age of 30. Gunn has described himself as celibate since 1985, a personal choice he has discussed candidly in interviews.
Gunn is a committed advocate for animal rights and has publicly condemned the use of animal fur in fashion design, calling the treatment of animals for fashion purposes “egregiously irresponsible.” In 2013, he endorsed Christine Quinn in her campaign for Mayor of New York City.
In addition to his television and fashion work, Gunn maintains an online presence through his blog and podcast, where he offers insights on style and culture. As of recent estimates, Tim Gunn has a net worth of approximately $15 million, reflective of his decades-long influence in the world of fashion and television.
