Vijay Singh was born on February 22, 1963, in Lautoka, Fiji. He is the son of Mohan Singh and Parwati Singh. Nicknamed The Big Fijian, Singh is a professional golfer known for his longevity and success on international tours. In his youth, he participated in various sports, including rugby, snooker, cricket, and football.
Singh’s father, Mohan, introduced him to golf during childhood. Financial constraints prevented the family from affording proper golf equipment, leading Singh to improvise—practicing his swing using coconuts instead of golf balls. He meticulously studied and modeled his swing after that of American professional golfer Tom Weiskopf, whose technique he deeply admired.
Singh turned professional in 1982. Two years later, he captured the Malaysian Professional Golfers' Association Championship. However, in 1985, he faced scrutiny for altering a scorecard, leading to a suspension and ultimately a lifetime ban from the Asian Professional Golfers’ Association Tour after the infractions were confirmed. Despite this setback, Singh persisted and continued competing in international tournaments.
In 1988, he moved to South Africa to participate in the Safari Tour, sponsored by Red Baron. That year he won the Nigerian Open and repeated the win in 1989. His 1988 victory marked the first time a person of Fijian-Indian descent had captured the title. He also qualified for the European Tour and claimed wins at the Volvo Open di Firenze in Italy, the Ivory Coast Open, and the Zimbabwe Open. Singh concluded that season 24th on the European Tour Order of Merit and tied for 23rd at the British Open—a marked improvement from his earlier challenges.
Singh’s success continued as he secured multiple wins on the European Tour in 1990 and again in 1992. Between 1990 and 1993, he maintained a strong presence in Asian and African tournaments. In 1993, Singh joined the PGA Tour in the United States, earning his first title at The Barclays and the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award.
Over the following years, Singh amassed several victories—including the Phoenix Open and another Barclays win in 1995, followed by successes at the Buick Open and the Memorial Tournament in 1997. A significant milestone in his career came in 1998 when he won the PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club, his first Major title.
Singh continued to dominate, winning the Masters Tournament in 2000 with a three-stroke lead over Ernie Els. In 2001, he recorded a tour-best 14 top-10 finishes and went on to win the Shell Houston Open in 2002, setting a new 72-hole scoring record at 266. That year, he also triumphed at the Tour Championship.
In 2004, Singh won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and recorded nine PGA Tour victories, reclaiming the world number one ranking that year. However, in 2005, he lost that top spot to Tiger Woods after Woods won the Ford Championship at Doral. By 2009, Singh was sidelined due to a back injury but remained one of the highest earners in the sport, with career earnings exceeding $60 million. His net worth is estimated at $75 million.
Vijay Singh married Ardena Seth in 1985. The couple has one son. Despite his prominence, as of now, there have been no major biographical films portraying Singh’s career.
