Will Poulter, born William Jack Poulter, was raised in a middle-class family in Hammersmith, London. His mother previously worked as a nurse, while his father is a professor of cardiology. Poulter has three siblings—one brother and two sisters. He attended the Harrodian School, where he became actively involved in the drama club. In interviews, he has credited his drama teacher for encouraging him to audition for his debut film, Son of Rambow.
Poulter began his acting career as a child. His breakthrough came in 2007 when he played the lead role in the coming-of-age film Son of Rambow. He was cast largely due to his expressive features, including his distinctive eyebrows, which suited the curious and imaginative nature of his character. Though his appearance has matured since then, Poulter’s early performance remains a notable milestone in his career. Over time, he has cultivated a strong fan following, with many of his images and updates shared widely on social media platforms including Twitter and Instagram.
Following his debut, Poulter continued to build a diverse filmography. In 2010, he played Eustace Scrubb in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He garnered further attention for his comedic role in We’re the Millers (2013), and went on to appear in several major productions, including The Maze Runner and Plastic in 2014, and both The Revenant and Glassland in 2015.
Beyond major film roles, Poulter participated in various television projects. In 2008, he joined the cast of the sketch comedy series School of Comedy, alongside other young actors. The show aired as a pilot on Channel 4’s Comedy Lab and ran for two seasons. In 2011, he also played a role in the supernatural thriller series The Fades.
In 2010, Poulter began filming the British independent film Wild Bill, which was released in 2012. His performance in the film was met with critical acclaim and showcased his dramatic range.
At one point, director Cary Fukunaga considered Poulter for the role of Pennywise the Clown in a planned adaptation of Stephen King’s It. The casting aimed to present a younger and more menacing version of the character, originally portrayed by Tim Curry in the 1990 television miniseries. Although Poulter was initially linked to the role, he ultimately did not appear in the final production. The role later went to Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård when Andy Muschietti took over as director.
Poulter has received multiple accolades for his performances. In 2014, he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award for his role as Gally in The Maze Runner. That same year, he earned the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight, shared with co-star Dylan O'Brien. Additionally, his comedic performance in We’re the Millers garnered three MTV Movie Awards: Best Breakthrough Performance, Best Kiss (shared with Emma Roberts and Jennifer Aniston), and Best Musical Moment.
In addition to acting, Poulter has expressed a strong passion for football and is a vocal supporter of the British film industry. He has cited Stand by Me (1986) as one of his all-time favorite films, reflecting his appreciation for emotionally driven storytelling. Despite his growing success in Hollywood, Poulter remains grounded and committed to exploring a wide range of roles in both mainstream and independent cinema.
