Will Poulter, born William Jack Poulter, was raised in a middle-class family in Hammersmith, London. His mother previously worked as a nurse, while his father is a professor of cardiology. Poulter has three siblings—one brother and two sisters. He attended the Harrodian School, where he became actively involved in the drama club. In interviews, he has credited his drama teacher for encouraging him to audition for his debut film, Son of Rambow.

At one point, director Cary Fukunaga considered Poulter for the role of Pennywise the Clown in a planned adaptation of Stephen King’s It. The casting aimed to present a younger and more menacing version of the character, originally portrayed by Tim Curry in the 1990 television miniseries. Although Poulter was initially linked to the role, he ultimately did not appear in the final production. The role later went to Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård when Andy Muschietti took over as director.
