William Devane was born on September 5, 1939 in Albany, New York. He is the <a href="/biography/william-devane">son</a> of <a href="/biography/william-devane">Joseph Devane</a>, who used to be the chauffeur for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt">Franklin D. Roosevelt</a> when he was a <a href="/biography/william-devane">governor</a> of New York State.

During his youth, William demonstrated his interest in acting. This was exhibited all the way through his high school years. He pursued his acting career seriously when he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, a famous art school located in the city of New York.

On The West Wing (1999), he guest featured as the Secretary of State. Devane appeared on the popular FOX show, 24 from 2005 to 2007 as James Heller. Her character was the Secretary of Defense.
