William Devane was born on September 5, 1939 in Albany, New York. He is the son of Joseph Devane, who used to be the chauffeur for Franklin D. Roosevelt when he was a governor of New York State.

During his youth, William demonstrated his interest in acting. This was exhibited all the way through his high school years. He pursued his acting career seriously when he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, a famous art school located in the city of New York.

Marriage, Wife, and Children

William Devane got married to his wife Eugenie Devane back in 1961 and they have been together for over 50 years. One of his children tragically died in an accident and the couple had to endure the painful loss of their son. Their other son is named Joshua Devane.

Career and Net Worth

William’s professional acting career kicked off n 1966. He got the role of Robert F. Kennedy which he played in a comedic stage production called MacBird. He quickly became famous for depicting the former American president, John F. Kennedy in a movie that centered around the Cuban Missile Crisis. The movie was called The Missiles of October and it had its premier back in 1974.

Besides resembling the former President, he had the extraordinary capacity to ace Kennedy's Boston unique accent. The role grew his notoriety and shot him to fame. He has kept on acting in different roles as a politician or president and has played a member of the Presidential Cabinet on two other dramas. On The West Wing (1999), he guest featured as the Secretary of State. Devane appeared on the popular FOX show, 24 from 2005 to 2007 as James Heller. Her character was the Secretary of Defense.

Not long after his star-making performance in The Missiles of October, Devane got praise for his depiction of John Henry Faulk, a boycotted radio host, in another TV film, the Emmy Award-winning Fear on Trial (1975).

His career as a television star kicked off when he got the role of Greg Sumner on the soap opera Knots Landing. The show was aired for 10 years and he was in each season of it. William appeared on Knots Landing from 1983 to 1993. On the show, he played an aggressive representative and CEO.

In 1994, Devane portrayed the role of Al Capone in the series called Louis & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He got to appear in the episode called Tat Old Gang of Mine.

On the sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 (1997), he played President Henry Hayes for three episodes and repeated his role in the direct to DVD film Stargate: Continuum. Devane additionally played the President of the United States in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (2012). He was blessed to have appeared in two motion pictures that opened in the same end of the week, Space Cowboys and Hollow Man. They were both released on August 6, 2000, and allowed William to procure double the cash.

Apart from being a great actor, William is also known to be a successful businessman.
