Yunjin Kim is an Asian-American actress best known for her portrayal of Sun-Hwa Kwon on the acclaimed television series Lost. She also starred as Dr. Karen Kim in the ABC drama Mistresses.
Yunjin Kim was born on November 7, 1973, in Seoul, South Korea. At age 10, she immigrated with her family to the United States, settling on Staten Island, New York. From an early age, Kim showed a strong interest in performing arts and pursued acting throughout her school years.
She attended the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan. She furthered her training by studying at the London Academy of Performing Arts and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama from Boston University. In addition to acting and dance, Kim has also received training in martial arts.
After graduating, Kim began her acting career in off-Broadway productions and small television roles. In the mid-1990s, she returned to South Korea to expand her opportunities. Her initial roles included the television dramas Splendid Holiday (1996) and Foreboding (1997).
Her breakout role came in 1999 with the film Shiri, widely regarded as South Korea's first major blockbuster. The movie's commercial success catapulted her into national fame. Over the next few years, she starred in a number of South Korean films such as Yesterday, Ardor, The Legend of Gingko, Rush, Iron Palm, and Love in 3 Colors.
In 2004, Kim achieved international acclaim when she was cast as Sun-Hwa Kwon in the ABC network’s hit drama Lost. A central character in the ensemble, she remained with the series through its entire six-season run until 2010. Kim's performance earned praise for its emotional depth and complexity, and she became a prominent figure in American television.
Alongside her work on Lost, she continued to appear in South Korean films, including Diary of June, The Mother, Seven Days, Harmony, Heartbeat, The Neighbor, and Ode to My Father. She reprised her role as Sun-Hwa in the video game adaptation Lost: Via Domus and voiced the character Tiffany Kim in the 2012 action-adventure video game Sleeping Dogs.
Following the conclusion of Lost, Kim took a brief hiatus from television before returning in 2013 as Dr. Karen Kim, one of the lead roles in the ABC series Mistresses. The show ran for four seasons until 2016, and her portrayal of a psychiatrist navigating complex personal and professional relationships was well received.
In 2010, Yunjin Kim married her former manager, Jeong Hyeok Park. The couple resides in Hawaii. Kim was ranked number 98 on Maxim magazine’s Hot 100 list in 2006. She stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and maintains a weight of approximately 50 kilograms.
Throughout her career, Kim has received several notable accolades. She was part of the Lost ensemble that won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. In 2002, she won the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Milae (Ardor).
