Gary Dwayne Payton popularly known as ‘The Glove’ for his splendid defensive ability is a native of Oakland, California. Gary was born to Al and Annie Payton. He is a winner of NBA championship with the game Miami Heat and has played basketball in Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics. Gary is also a winner of Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame held in the year 2013 on September 8. He is one and only one player to win the NBA defensive player of the year award for his excellent performance and is known as the best point guard of all time. Gary was chosen 9 times in the All-Defensive first team for NBA. Gary was also chosen as All-Star player nearly 9 times for NBA and as an All-NBA team member.
Gary has attended the Skyline High School in Oakland, where he has played basketball with the NBA player Greg Foster. Later on, Gary went to Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon to complete his higher studies. Soon Gary became the star of Oregon State University basketball team and was able to create a history in the college. In the year 1990 i.e. on March 5, Gary was featured on the cover page of Sports Illustrated Magazine under the title best college basketball player in the nation. Gary was entered as the Pac 10 player of the week 9 times and was recognized 3 times as the MVP of the Far West Classic tournament. He earned the record for field goals, assists, steals and points in his college days and still earns them. He appeared 3 times in NCAA tournament and one time in NIT tournament while at college. In the year 1996, Gary earned the title of Sports Hall of Fame at OSU.
Gary has earned the title of most technical fouls of all time due to his trash talk. In the year 2001, Gary got a chance to arrive on several television shows and movies. Gary has always been an inspiration to his team and during the NBA All-Star game, his inspirational speech has motivated his all team mates.
Though his career came to an end in the year 2007, Gary will always be considered as the best point guards ever. After Michael Jordan won the title of NBA defensive player of the year award in the year 1988, Gary was considered as the second person to win the same title. Gary is also listed among the third all-time player in the career steals. Payton has been considered as the 5th player to win the title of all-time guards in defensive rebounds and was the 12th player to earn this title in offensive rebounds and he was also considered as the 10th player to win the title in total rebounds.
