When at Yorkshire he played as an opener. He was known to be a hard hitting batsman and hit long sixes in the process. He was very strong and could hit every bowler for big sixes. After many impressive performances, he was selected in the under 19 cricket team and he soon started to make an impact in the team as he hit a century in the first match itself. He was known to be a very great motivator for the team as he led by example and always played well. He made his debut in 1964 against a very strong Australian team. In his first match, he made 48 which was the top score of the team.
