George Chakiris is a retired American dancer, singer, and actor best known for his portrayal of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang, in the 1961 film adaptation of West Side Story.
Born to Greek immigrant parents, George Chakiris began his Hollywood career as a dancer in musical films during the 1950s. Before landing his breakthrough role in West Side Story, he appeared—often uncredited—in several notable productions alongside screen legends such as Cyd Charisse, Mitzi Gaynor, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, and Rosemary Clooney. His performances in classics like There's No Business Like Show Business, Brigadoon, White Christmas, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, in which he appeared as a dancer alongside Marilyn Monroe, showcased his strong background in dance and stage presence.
Chakiris was first cast as Riff, the leader of the Jets, in the West End stage production of West Side Story in the late 1950s. His compelling onstage performance led director Robert Wise to cast him as Bernardo, Riff's rival and leader of the Sharks, in the 1961 film adaptation. His portrayal earned him both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, cementing his place in film history.
George Chakiris went on to build a distinguished international career across film, television, and live performance. He appeared in approximately two dozen films, as well as acclaimed miniseries in Europe and Japan. His work for the BBC and participation in concert tours, including engagements in Las Vegas and other global venues, highlighted his versatility as a performer. His ability to sing, dance, and act made him a true triple-threat talent, respected across both American and international entertainment industries.
