Gerald Green is an American professional basketball player best known for his athleticism and high-flying dunks. He has played for multiple NBA teams, including a notable tenure with the Houston Rockets.
Gerald Green was born on January 26, 1986, in Houston, Texas. At a young age, he experienced a serious accident that resulted in the partial amputation of his right ring finger. While attempting a dunk in the sixth grade, he was wearing a ring that got caught on a nail, causing the injury. Despite this, Green pursued basketball with determination and turned his setback into a source of motivation.
Green entered the NBA directly out of high school, selected 18th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2005 NBA Draft. At the time, he was regarded as a highly athletic prospect, drawing comparisons to former Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady due to his scoring potential and leaping ability. However, teams were cautious because of his raw skill set, which contributed to his mid-first-round selection.
He was among the final players to bypass college and be drafted straight out of high school before the NBA implemented a rule requiring American players to be at least one year removed from high school graduation and be 19 years old by December 31 of the draft year. This rule aimed to ensure players were more physically and mentally prepared for the professional level.
On December 28, 2017, Green signed with the Houston Rockets for a second stint with the team. He quickly made an impact, scoring a season-high 27 points in a 116–98 victory over the Orlando Magic on January 3, 2018. During that game, he became the first player in franchise history to make at least seven three-pointers in consecutive games. Later that season, on March 30, 2018, he hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to secure a dramatic win against the Phoenix Suns. Green re-signed with the Rockets on July 10, 2018, further solidifying his role as a valued bench contributor and perimeter shooter.
In November 2019, during a tough loss to the Miami Heat (129–100), the Rockets’ performance drew sharp criticism from head coach Mike D'Antoni, who labeled the team’s effort as “soft.” Green, although sidelined at the time due to injury, was still considered an important veteran presence in the locker room.
Gerald Green is in a long-term relationship with Dorislyn Martinez. Together, they have two sons, Geremiah and Julius. Green often shares his appreciation for his family and their support throughout his basketball journey.
