Before the 2013 season, McCoy finally returned to full health. That year, he had a breakout campaign, reaffirming why Tampa Bay had invested a top-three pick in him. He became a dominant force on the defensive line, earning his second Pro Bowl selection and being named a First-Team All-Pro.

In 2014, McCoy’s performance continued to improve. The Buccaneers rewarded his excellence by signing him to a seven-year contract extension worth $98 million, making him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league at the time. Unfortunately, that same year, he suffered a knee injury, marking another difficult chapter in his career.

Despite additional injuries in 2015, including hand and shoulder issues, McCoy was still recognized for his elite level of play. He was ranked No. 63 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. That year, he was fined $12,000 for a celebration following a quarterback sack. While the NFL deemed the display excessive, McCoy remained unapologetic, emphasizing his passion for the game and his excitement to be back on the field.

In 2016, McCoy was named to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors. He was ranked No. 52 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017, proof of his consistent performance among the league’s elite. His ability to rise through adversity and persistent setbacks helped solidify his reputation as one of the league’s premier defensive linemen.

Gerald McCoy married Ebony McCoy in 2013. Together, they have four children. Their sons are Gerald Keith McCoy Jr. and Marcellus Crutchfield, while their daughters are named Germany McCoy and Nevaeh McCoy.
