Gerald McCoy

Players will often go to games without being one hundred percent healthy. Since there is a game once a week, there isn’t that much time to recover. Players have to take games off to rest and heal up. If they come back soon, they risk causing more damage and will possibility have a shorter career than they expect. It is during the offseason that players really get to rest their bodies and nurse their injuries.

Redemption

Before his third season in 2013, Gerald was finally able to fully recover from his injuries. He was able to come back in full force with nothing holding him back. The 2013 National Football League season was a great year for Gerald as he became a top performer and showed the world why he was such a high draft pick.

In 2014, his performance improved again. He played so well that he was offered and signed an extension with the team that drafted him. He showed so much skill that the Tampa Bay Bucs were still willing to give him a large contract even though he had issues with injuries early in his career. He signed a huge contract that had a duration of 7 years and a value of 98 Million Dollars.

Unfortunately for Gerald, the highs of the contract would be followed by another low. In 2014, he injured his knee. Tampa Bay had taken a risk by signing him to a large contract but the gamble did not seem to be paying off.

In 2015, Gerald couldn’t play a lot of games because of hand and should injuries. Even in limited playing time, he was still able to secure the 63rd rank on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. That same year he was also fined for $12,000. The reason for this fine was his celebration after sacking the quarterback. The league felt that his celebration was distasteful and fined him to prevent future behavior. Gerald didn’t mind the fine, he was just happy to be back on the field playing at a high level. If he was going to get fined for showing emotion and passion for the game, he didn’t care. He already had a lot of money in his bank account and didn’t care about having to pay the fine. He would rather pay the fine after celebrating instead of being on the sidelines with another annoying injury.

Gerald was named to his 5th straight Pro Bowl and was named to second team All Pro in 2016. He was ranked 52 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017. As his career went on, he kept rising on the top players list. To be around the top 50 in a league that had hundreds of players was a big deal for Gerald. He had to deal with injuries early in his career, but through hard work and dedication, he was able to overcome his issues and become a great player.
