On December 24, 2009, Gilbert Arenas admitted to storing unloaded firearms in his locker at the Verizon Center, which he voluntarily surrendered to team officials. This violated both NBA policies and Washington D.C.'s firearm regulations.
The matter escalated following reports of a confrontation between Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton in the Washington Wizards' locker room over a gambling dispute. Both players allegedly displayed firearms during the incident.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Attorney's Office launched an investigation. On January 14, 2010, Arenas was formally charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm, a felony offense under D.C.'s strict gun laws. He pleaded guilty the following day and was later sentenced under the legal guidelines for the offense.
