Early Life and Education

Born on December 31, 1965, in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, Gong Li was the youngest of five children. She spent much of her childhood in Jinan, located in Shandong Province. Gong developed an interest in acting early in life, which led her to pursue theatrical studies. In 1985, she was admitted to the prestigious Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, graduating in 1989.

Breakthrough Role and Partnership with Zhang Yimou

During her second year at the Central Academy of Drama, Gong Li was cast in the lead role of Jiu'er in the film Red Sorghum (1987), marking her cinematic debut. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou and became a significant turning point in both of their careers. Gong Li would go on to collaborate with Zhang Yimou on a total of seven films, gaining widespread recognition for her powerful performances. Their professional success was paralleled by a personal relationship, which ended in 1995.

Rise to International Fame

Gong Li solidified her status as one of China's most celebrated actresses through critically acclaimed roles in films such as Ju Dou (1990), where she played the title character, and Raise the Red Lantern (1991), where she portrayed Songlian. Her performance in Raise the Red Lantern earned international acclaim and helped establish her as a global acting talent.

In 2005, Gong Li made her English-language debut in Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha, playing the role of Hatsumomo. The film introduced her to a broader Western audience and showcased her versatility across languages and cultures.
