Born on December 31, 1965, in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, Gong Li was the youngest of five children. She spent much of her childhood in Jinan, located in Shandong Province. Gong developed an interest in acting early in life, which led her to pursue theatrical studies. In 1985, she was admitted to the prestigious Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, graduating in 1989.
During her second year at the Central Academy of Drama, Gong Li was cast in the lead role of Jiu'er in the film Red Sorghum (1987), marking her cinematic debut. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou and became a significant turning point in both of their careers. Gong Li would go on to collaborate with Zhang Yimou on a total of seven films, gaining widespread recognition for her powerful performances. In 2005, Gong Li made her English-language debut in Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha, playing the role of Hatsumomo. The film introduced her to a broader Western audience and showcased her versatility across languages and cultures.
