Early Life and Education

Hugo Wallace Weaving was born on April 4, 1960, at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Although born in Nigeria, Weaving spent his early childhood in South Africa and England. He attended The Downs School, Wraxall in England before his family relocated to Australia in 1976. There, he enrolled at Knox Grammar School in Sydney, where he completed his high school education. He later graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), one of Australia's premier performing arts schools.

Career Beginnings and Rise to Fame

Weaving began his acting career with his first major role in the Australian television miniseries Bodyline (1984). He followed this with appearances in The Dirtwater Dynasty (1988) and Bangkok Hilton (1989), which helped establish him on the national entertainment scene. In 1993, he appeared in the Australian comedy Reckless Kelly. However, it was his performance in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) that brought him international recognition. His portrayal was widely acclaimed and contributed to the film’s global success.

Notable Film Roles and Achievements

Weaving is best known internationally for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy, Elrond in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and V in V for Vendetta. These roles cemented his reputation for strong performances in science fiction and fantasy genres. He also starred in other acclaimed films including Cloud Atlas and Captain America: The First Avenger. His distinctive deep voice led him to voice characters in the Happy Feet films, including Rex and Noah.

Weaving's career has been marked by numerous accolades. He has received awards such as the MTV Movie Award, the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award, and the Satellite Award. He was also nominated for the 2005 Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role. His performance in The Interview earned him Best Actor at the Montreal World Film Festival.
