Breakthrough Role: Steve Urkel on Family Matters

White is best known for his portrayal of Steve Urkel, a quirky and lovable teenage genius, on the hit sitcom Family Matters, which aired as part of ABC’s popular TGIF programming lineup during the 1990s. Originally intended as a one-time guest character, Urkel’s popularity quickly soared, leading White to become a central figure on the show. His portrayal, marked by exaggerated mannerisms and iconic wardrobe choices—including oversized glasses—captivated audiences and turned him into a household name.

According to White, when he auditioned for the role in 1989, he wanted to find glasses that personified Urkel’s stereotypical "nerdy" look. After failing to find the right pair, his father, a practicing dentist, provided protective eyewear he used at work, which eventually became part of the character’s signature look.

Voice Work and Film Roles

Outside of Family Matters, White lent his voice to the beloved animated character Sonic the Hedgehog in several animated series during the early 1990s, including Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993). His work as Sonic introduced him to a younger generation and showcased his versatility as a voice actor.

He also appeared in the 2002 comedy film Big Fat Liar, where he played a fictional version of himself in a memorable cameo, further demonstrating his comfort with self-parody and comedic roles.
