James married the actress Julienne Marie in 1968, but the couple divorced in 1972. In 1982, James married the actress Cecilia Hart, with whom he had one child, Flynn Earl Jones. His wife died on October 16, 2016, after a one-year battle with ovarian cancer. James has been dealing with diabetes since the mid 1990s.
