His first recurring role came in 2008 in Prison Break as Roland Glenn. In 2013, he starred in Unforgettable as Jay Lee. The series ended in 2016. In 2006, he took the role of Chang in DTV Hard Luck.

His first break through in movies came in 2009 along Jennifer Aniston in Management. Later, he took up a few other roles like Steven Mottola of Battle: Los Angeles, Vengeance Bridge Officer in Star Trek Into Darkness and others. He was the voice actor of Toshiaki in Frankenweenie.

His recent TV shows include Heartbeat, NCIS: New Orleans and others. James is starring as Eddie Change in Four Stars, a TV movie. In 2011, he produced a documentary called Yellow Face. He also made a short documentary named Unforgettable Moments: Inside Season 3 in 2015.
