Early Life and Education

Jan Crawford was born in 1965 and raised on a farm in Alabama. She attended Brewer High School and later earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1987. In 1993, she graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. Her background in law has significantly shaped her career as a legal correspondent and journalist.

Career in Journalism and Legal Reporting

Crawford began her journalism career in 1987 as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, where she covered legal affairs. Her in-depth reporting earned recognition, including an award for a 13-part series on the civil rights movement in 1996. In 2001, she was honored as one of the top reporters at the Tribune.

From 1998 to 2007, Crawford provided insightful legal analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court. Among her major exclusives were televised interviews with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice John Paul Stevens, where they discussed their careers and perspectives on the judiciary. Her legal expertise and journalistic excellence led her to serve as the Supreme Court analyst for CBS’s Face the Nation and as a senior legal correspondent for ABC News from 2007 to 2009.

In 2010, she joined CBS News, where she currently serves as chief legal correspondent and political correspondent. She regularly appears on CBS programs such as CBS This Morning and Face the Nation. She also launched a legal blog for CBS called “Crossroads,” providing in-depth commentary on political and legal developments.
