Early Life and Education

Jayma Mays, born Jamia Suzette Mays on July 16, 1979, in Bristol, Tennessee, is an American actress and singer. She grew up in nearby Grundy, Virginia. Mays graduated from high school in 1997 and went on to earn an associate degree from Southwest Virginia Community College. She later transferred to Virginia Tech and finished her education at Radford University, where she studied theater.

Television Career

Mays made her television debut in 2004 with a guest role on the NBC sitcom Joey. Over the years, she built a diverse television portfolio, with recurring and guest appearances in several notable shows. She had roles in Ugly Betty (2007–2008), Drunk History (2013–2019), The League (2012–2014), Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (2015), and The Millers (2013–2015).

Breakthrough on Glee

Mays is best known for her role as guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee (2009–2015). She was a main cast member during the show's first three seasons and later appeared as a guest star through its conclusion in season six. Her performance was well-received and helped establish her as a recognizable figure in television.
