Joseph Edward Root was born on December 30, 1990, in Dore, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. He is the eldest of four children born to Matt and Helen Root. His younger brother, Billy Root, is also a professional cricketer who has represented various county sides in England.
Root attended King Ecgbert School in Sheffield and later developed his cricketing skills at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club, where his father had also played. The club had a strong cricketing tradition and was notably associated with former Yorkshire and England captain Michael Vaughan. Inspired by Vaughan’s achievements, Root became something of a protégé under his influence.
Joe Root made his debut for Yorkshire’s Second XI in 2007 in a match against Derbyshire at Abbeydale. He impressed with a score of 57, forming a 133-run opening partnership with Adam Lyth. His performance earned him the Player of the Tournament award and contributed to Yorkshire securing the ProARCH Trophy. Later that year, Root was called up to Yorkshire’s first team for their final Pro40 match of the season against Essex at Headingley, where he top-scored for his side.
Following this strong start, Root signed a three-year professional contract with Yorkshire. He was selected to represent England in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 70 in a win over Hong Kong before England was eliminated by the West Indies. Root later honed his skills at the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy in Adelaide, South Australia, a move that significantly shaped his technique and maturity as a player.
