Amateur Career and Rise to the NHL

He notably spent two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where his performance drew significant attention and praise from teammates and coaches alike.

In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, the Boston Bruins selected Thornton as the first overall pick. He went on to debut that same year and remained with the Bruins until 2005.
