Joshua Michael Homme was born on May 17, 1973, in Joshua Tree, California. He is the son of Irene and Michael Homme. His father worked as a private general contractor, building homes throughout the Coachella Valley. Josh Homme has an older brother named Jason. His surname, "Homme," originates from the Norwegian town of Valle. He is of English, French-Canadian, German-Jewish, Norwegian, and Swedish descent.

Homme grew up in and around Palm Desert, California, a region that played a significant role in his cultural upbringing. His grandfather, Cap Homme, relocated to the area from North Dakota and became one of the early settlers of the Coachella Valley.
