Julie Walters is an English actress and writer who was born on February 22, 1950, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England. Walters was born to Mary Bridget, a postal clerk from Ireland, and Thomas Walters, an English builder. She grew up near Lightwoods Park in the Bearwood area of Smethwick. She is the youngest of five siblings. She first attended a convent school as a little girl but later went on to attend Holly Lodge Grammar School for Girls in Smethwick. She first gained employment at age 15 as an insurance agent. By the age of 18, she was training as a student nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. During her time with the hospital, Walters worked on the ophthalmic, casualty and coronary care wards. She decided to leave nursing and went on to study English and drama at Manchester Polytechnic, currently known as Manchester Metropolitan University. In the 1970s, Walters began working for the Everyman Theater Company in Liverpool.
She performed alongside Billy Nighy, Pete Postlethwaite, Jonathan Pryce, Willy Russell, and Alan Bleasdale. She went on to have a successful acting career in both film and television. She played Mary Whitehouse in the BBC Drama "Filth: The Mary Whitehouse Story". Her career has earned her a Golden Globe and been nominated for an Academy Award twice. She had a daughter with Grant Roffey in 1988 but weren't married until 1997.
