Early Life and Education

Justin Chatwin was born on October 31, 1982, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. His father, Brian Chatwin, is a civil engineer, and his mother, Suzanne Chatwin, is a documentary filmmaker. He has two sisters, Brieanne and Claire. Raised in a Catholic household, Chatwin developed interests in film, photography, camping, sports, and adventure from a young age.

Initially, acting was not part of his career plans. However, a friend encouraged him to audition for a background role in the film Josie and the Pussycats, which sparked his interest in performing. With the support of his parents, he chose to forgo a traditional college path and instead pursue acting professionally. He hired an agent and began appearing in Canadian television programs in 2001.

Chatwin also studied commerce at the University of British Columbia and took acting classes in his free time. During his time in Canada, he was an avid snowboarder. In 2005, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to further his career, sharing a modest apartment with fellow aspiring actor Noel Fisher.

Early Career and Breakthrough Roles

Following his brief appearance in Josie and the Pussycats, Chatwin landed minor roles in Canadian television series and films. Some of his early credits include episodes of Smallville and Glory Days, as well as the family film Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2. His performance as Tyler McKay in the American miniseries Traffic gained him critical attention, with Newsweek naming him an actor to watch.

Chatwin's major breakthrough came when he played the role of Robbie Ferrier, Tom Cruise’s son, in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 blockbuster War of the Worlds. This role brought him mainstream recognition. Chatwin had previously worked with co-star Dakota Fanning in the sci-fi miniseries Taken.

Filmography Highlights

In 2007, Chatwin starred in The Invisible, a thriller based on the Swedish film of the same name—his first lead role. He continued to take on diverse roles, appearing in independent films such as Bang Bang Baby and No Stranger Than Love. In 2011, he starred in a short film titled Bring, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Additional screen credits include roles in television shows such as Lost (2004) and Weeds (2005), where he gained a fan following for his recurring appearances. Chatwin also remained involved in feature films, with projects like the thriller Urge and the romantic comedy Unleashed.
