When Katharine was born, her father was away in the US Navy but he was eager to come home to meet his daughter. Her father’s navy career moved her family around to first Virginia, then Palo Alto, and they eventually found a final resting place in Walnut Creek. The small town is outside of San Francisco.
Ross loved growing up in the small town because it gave her a humble upbringing. Her parents have many European ancestors which includes a line of Scottish, German, Channel Islander (Guernsey), and English relatives. She graduated from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek in 1957 and then went on to attend Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area. It was there that she fell in love with film.
