Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson was born on August 26, 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She is famous for being an African-American mathematician whose precise calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were important to the success of the first manned spaceflights of the United States.
She was selected to be one of three black students to integrate into West Virginia’s graduate schools. It was a key moment in her life and ended up being one of the best decisions for the country. Without her skill and expertise, NASA may have not received the funding that they would enjoy in the years during Katherine’s term there.
She was a very bright student and excelled at an early age. When she was just thirteen, she was already attending the high school on the campus of a historically black West Virginia State College. Nothing would hold her back from achieving greatness, not even color lines or segregation.
