Early Life and Education

Kathryn Hahn was born on July 23, 1973, and is of German, Irish, and English descent. A U.S. national, she spent most of her early life in Cleveland, Ohio, after her family relocated there. She attended Beaumont School for her early education. Driven by a deep passion for acting, Hahn pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Theater from Northwestern University. She further honed her craft at the prestigious Yale School of Drama, where she participated in stage productions such as Cabaret (as Sally Bowles) and Molière (as Célimène).

Early Career in Theater and Television

Kathryn Hahn began her career in children’s television with her appearance on Hickory Hideout, a locally produced puppet show. Her transition into mainstream television began when a director from NBC noticed her stage talent and introduced her to the producers of the network. This led to her breakout role as Lily Lebowski on the crime drama series Crossing Jordan, which aired from 2001 to 2007.

Following the success of Crossing Jordan, Hahn took on roles in various television comedies. She starred in NBC’s Free Agents (2011) and appeared in Parks and Recreation as the ambitious political strategist Jennifer Barkley. She also had recurring roles in HBO series such as Hung and Girls.
