Education and Early Life

Hartung attended Episcopal High School, a private coeducational institution in Baton Rouge. After high school, she pursued higher education at Washington and Lee University, a private liberal arts college in Lexington, Virginia. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Politics.

Career Beginnings with CBS News

Kaylee launched her professional career at CBSNews.com, the digital division of CBS News. In this role, she reported daily news and was also responsible for photography, editing, and producing her reports—demonstrating a broad range of journalistic skills early in her career.

Transition into Television: 'Face the Nation' and Political Journalism

She began her television career as a production assistant on the long-running CBS political program, Face the Nation. While there, she also worked closely with veteran journalist Bob Schieffer, assisting him and gaining invaluable experience in political reporting. Additionally, she served as a reporter for CBS News programs including Washington Unplugged and Unplugged Under 40.

Sports Journalism and CBS Sports Network

Hartung transitioned into sports broadcasting at CBS Sports Network. She covered a wide range of major sporting events, both online and on television. Her coverage included the PGA Championship, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the BCS National Championship, and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. She also contributed to CBS and Turner Sports as a correspondent for various collegiate and professional events.

In 2012, Hartung joined the Longhorn Network, an ESPN-affiliated network focused on University of Texas athletics. She hosted the program Longhorn Extra and was also involved in coverage of Texas Game Day.

In 2014, with the launch of the SEC Network—a collaboration between ESPN and the Southeastern Conference (SEC)—Hartung was onboarded as a reporter for SEC Nation. She also made regular appearances on ESPN’s flagship program, SportsCenter.
