Early Life and Education

Kenneth "Kenny" Smith was born on March 8, 1965, in Queens, New York. He attended Archbishop Molloy High School, where he was trained by legendary coach Jack Curran. Smith’s high school success set the stage for his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina under the guidance of coaching icon Dean Smith. During his time at UNC, Kenny earned second-team All-ACC honors as a sophomore and junior, and became a Consensus First-Team All-American in 1987. He graduated in 1987 with a degree in Industrial Relations (Economics).

Professional Basketball Career

Smith began his professional basketball journey after being selected sixth overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. Over his 10-year NBA career, he played for six teams: Sacramento Kings (1987–1990), Atlanta Hawks (1990), Houston Rockets (1990–1996), Detroit Pistons (1996), Orlando Magic (1996–1997), and Denver Nuggets (1997).

His most notable stint was with the Houston Rockets, where he was an integral part of the team’s back-to-back championship wins in 1994 and 1995. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1988 and delivered a standout performance during Game 1 of the 1995 NBA Finals—hitting seven three-pointers, including a clutch game-tying shot that forced overtime. The Rockets went on to defeat the Orlando Magic 120-118.

Over the course of his career, he recorded 9,397 points, 1,454 rebounds, and 4,073 assists. In 2010, Smith also participated in and won the NBA Shooting Stars competition during All-Star Weekend.

NBA Analyst and Broadcasting Career

Following his retirement from professional basketball, Kenny Smith transitioned into broadcasting and has since become a respected studio analyst. He currently works for TNT as a core member of the Emmy Award-winning program Inside the NBA.
