Kevin Harlan was born in June 1960 in Wisconsin. He is the son of Bob Harlan, a former executive of the Green Bay Packers. Harlan attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a degree in journalism in 1982. During his time at the university, he studied sportscasting under Tom Hedrick, a former Super Bowl and Kansas City Chiefs play-by-play announcer.
Kevin Harlan began his broadcasting career in 1982 as the radio and television voice of the NBA's Kansas City Kings. He later returned to his alma mater as a basketball announcer. For a season, he also served as an announcer for NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. During this time, he balanced responsibilities by calling basketball and football games for the University of Missouri.
Harlan spent over nine seasons calling NBA games for the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 1991, he joined NBC to call NFL games and also contributed to their NBA playoff coverage. Kevin Harlan served as the lead announcer for Westwood One’s Monday Night Football coverage and was the voice behind their NCAA Final Four broadcasts up through 2008. Notably, he provided play-by-play commentary for Super Bowl XLV. He is also known as a lead play-by-play announcer for the NBA on TNT, a role that further highlights his prominence in sports broadcasting.
