Kim Coates was born in 1958 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to parents Joyce and Fred Coates. He did not develop an early interest in acting and had never seen a play until he attended the University of Saskatchewan. While studying there, Coates enrolled in a drama class as an elective. This experience sparked a passion for the stage, ultimately leading him to pursue a career in acting. Within two years, he committed fully to the profession.
