Kirsten Welker, NBC News' White House correspondent, was born on July 1, 1976, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Raised in a biracial household, her mother, Julie Welker, is African American, and her father, Harvey Welker, is white. Kirsten is an only child. She attended Germantown Friends School, where she graduated with honors in 1994. She went on to study at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and graduating cum laude in 1998.
Welker began her journalism career as a researcher for NBC's "Weekend Today" and then moved to CBS News, serving as an assistant producer with CBS Newspath. She gained on-air experience at KRCR-TV in California, which paved the way for her to take a reporting job at WLNE-TV in Rhode Island. Her career continued to advance when she joined WCAU, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate, in 2005 where she anchored weekend newscasts.
