Laura San Giacomo was born on November 14, 1962, in West Orange, New Jersey, and is of Italian descent. Her parents, MaryJo and John San Giacomo, raised her in Denville, New Jersey. She attended Morris Knolls High School before enrolling at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh. She graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting. After completing her education, San Giacomo moved to New York City to pursue her acting career.
San Giacomo began her career in theater. One of her early notable performances was in the production of Wrong Turn at Lungfish, directed by Garry Marshall. She also appeared in various stage productions, including Shakespearean plays such as The Tempest, As You Like It, Crimes of the Heart, and Romeo and Juliet, showcasing her versatility and classical training.
