Julia Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia. Her father, Walter Roberts, was a Baptist, and her mother adhered to Roman Catholicism. She has two siblings: actor Eric Roberts and actress Lisa Roberts Gillan.
As a child, Roberts initially aspired to become a veterinarian. However, after graduating from Campbell High School in Smyrna, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. There, she signed with the Click Modeling Agency and began taking acting classes to hone her skills.
Roberts made her film debut in 1988 with a supporting role in the movie Satisfaction. Later that same year, she landed her first major role in Mystic Pizza, which helped establish her as a rising talent in Hollywood. She gained further recognition in 1989 with her performance in Steel Magnolias, earning her an Academy Award nomination and her first Golden Globe Award.
Roberts became a global star with her lead role in Pretty Woman (1990), although this was absent in the original text. Her career includes numerous successful films such as Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), Hook (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), Mary Reilly (1996), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and Runaway Bride (1999).
In 2004, Roberts starred in the ensemble drama Closer, directed by Mike Nichols, replacing Cate Blanchett. That same year, she reprised her role in the sequel Ocean's Twelve. Other notable films include Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Valentine’s Day (2010), Eat Pray Love (2010), and Mirror Mirror (2012). Collectively, Roberts’s films have grossed over $2.6 billion worldwide, making her one of the most commercially successful actresses in Hollywood.
